Automated External Defibrillator
What is an AED?
An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. Sudden cardiac arrest is an abrupt loss of heart function where the heart cannot effectively pump blood. If not treated within minutes, cardiac arrest leads to death. The AED shock can stop irregular heart rhythms and allow a normal rhythm to resume following sudden cardiac arrest.
Who should have an AED?
AEDs are typically found in locations such as hospitals, health facilities, and ambulances for use by health professionals and first responders. In recent years, AEDs have become more common in public places, including corporate and government offices, shopping centers, restaurants, public transportation, and any other location where people may congregate.
As the cost of AEDs have decreased, individuals purchasing AEDs for in-home use has become more common as well. One circumstance that would warrant an in-home AED is to be prepared to quickly respond to a member of the household who has a heart condition.
